Filmmaker FAQ

How can I submit to JDIFF?

All film submissions for the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival must come through our FilmFreeway page. Submissions for the 2024 festival are now CLOSED. Thank you to all the filmmakers who submitted for this year’s festival and we hope to see you there!

How are films scored and selected?

Our selection process consists of several rounds of judging from our jurors based on different sets of criteria. Each film is reviewed by multiple screeners as well as our executive director to ensure every submission is granted equal chance of selection. At each round of judging, films are given scores that determine whether or not it is a final selection.

Can I get a waiver code?

Submission fees play an important role in helping to run the festival, so we are not able to offer full waiver codes. On rare occasion, we will provide discount codes to those with extenuating circumstances. If you believe your situation qualifies you for a discount code, please email juliendubuquefilmfest@gmail.com

Will JDIFF pay a screening fee for my film?

JDIFF does not pay screening fees for films that are submitted for review.

How do I know if my film was accepted?

You will be personally contacted via email by our executive director, Susan Gorrell, to confirm your film’s status in early March. We will send all communications to the email provided on your FilmFreeway submission.

My film was accepted! What happens next?

All films that are accepted into the festival will be required to provide a digital screening copy, as well as a physical backup. Technical specs will be provided at a later time. We will also request a trailer link and poster image. Our team will be in touch regularly to coordinate the delivery of all these materials and more.

How do passes work?

Each accepted film will be provided with two filmmaker passes. These passes grant access to the filmmaker lounge and all film screenings and events.

Does the festival provide travel and accommodations for filmmakers?

JDIFF is not able to fund travel for all filmmakers.

All other filmmakers are encouraged to take advantage of our local homestay program. This program matches attending filmmakers with a trusted local host and a place to stay. Though hosts are not required to provide meals and transportation, food is regularly available in the filmmaker lounge. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided on select days in the festival, and snacks are available at multiple events.
